Historic Homes and Newer Subdivisions

The plumbing in this part of Lorain County depends a lot on when the house was built. In the older neighborhoods of Elyria, Lorain and Oberlin, many homes date from the early and middle 1900s. Expect cast iron drain stacks, clay sewer laterals out to the street, galvanized steel water lines that have narrowed with rust, and in some houses a patchwork of repairs from different decades. These houses reward a careful plumber: old valves that have not been turned in years, fittings that need support while they are worked on, and pipes that are best replaced in sections rather than disturbed piece by piece.

The newer subdivisions in Avon, Avon Lake, North Ridgeville and Amherst have plastic drains, copper or PEX water lines and a sump pump in nearly every basement. Their problems are different: builder-grade fixtures wearing out at the same time, sump pumps working hard in clay soil, and water heaters reaching the end of their life in whole streets at once.

Toward the edges of the county, around Grafton and Wellington, some homes are on a private well or a septic system. If yours is, mention it when you call so we know what we are working with.

Out-of-Area Calls and Travel

Do you charge a travel fee?

Ask when you call. We explain what the visit costs before anyone comes out, wherever you are in our area, so the bill holds no surprises.

My town is not on the list. Will you come?

Call and ask. For some jobs just outside the area we can make the trip, and if we cannot, we tell you straight away so you can call someone closer.

I live in a township. Am I covered?

Addresses in the townships around Elyria use the same ZIP codes as the nearby cities and villages. If your ZIP code is in the table, you are in our area.

How quickly can you get to my town?

We do not publish arrival times by town, because they depend on the day's schedule more than the distance. When you call, we tell you honestly when we can be there, and then we show up at that time.
